Thales, in partnership with Welsh Government and the University of South Wales, have created a National Digital Exploitation Centre (NDEC), in recognition of the need to create and retain high value jobs in the region as well as stimulate sustainable growth in regional business. The NDEC is a custom-built facility in Ebbw Vale South Wales to meet this need.

The education focus of NDEC will be on outreach activities to raise awareness of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) including for example Digital Skills and Cyber Security to school children, upskilling of teachers and the local workforce and providing career development opportunities to local businesses.

To help support our development, we are seeking an outreach delivery officer to be responsible for developing and delivering training courses and material primarily through the medium of Welsh in line with the NDEC agenda. Working closely with multiple different stakeholders, the customer community and both internal/external partners, the candidate will be a highly organised and diligent individual to make the role a success.

Job Description

Job purpose

The main purpose of the post is to develop and deliver inspiring workshops, delivered in an enthusiastic manner and to a professional standard primarily through the medium of Welsh. To collect participant data, to audit and oversee the delivery of workshop participants to ensure engagement and safety.

Key responsibilities

The Education outreach delivery officer (Welsh speaker) will be responsible to the NDEC Training Lead, for the delivery of workshops across the South East Wales region. Duties include:

• Be responsible for organising, developing and delivering workshops based on computational thinking and its applications within other STEM subjects, primarily through the medium of Welsh.
• Establish and maintain contact with all schools and colleges to raise the profile and encourage participation in the NDEC programme.
• Manage and maintain the regular contact that is required with the schools and colleges to inform them of the topics and format of the workshops, master classes and events available through the NDEC operation.
• Work with local schools and colleges to determine their specific needs in respect of tailored activities, including school-based workshops.
• Be responsible for the preparation and upkeep of the NDEC programme of activities for schools and colleges through the medium of Welsh.
• Engage with local academics to raise the profile of and gain support for NDEC.
• Engage with STEM representatives from local education authorities to raise the profile of and gain support for NDEC.
• Engage with the four Regional Education Consortia and other education and young person support organisations to develop collaborative links.
• Ensure best practice in event management in respect of, e.g., allocation of resources; catering requirements; administration; school access to university campus; and speaker arrangements.
• Manage and coordinate all regional reporting requirements for the programme and ensure accurate record keeping of all NDEC participant information.
• Work closely with relevant departments, to ensure all information required to support the project’s Audit requirements is collated and maintained appropriately.
• Attend local and pan-Wales education events representing NDEC for research and promotional opportunities.
• Promote equality and diversity in working practices and to maintain positive working relationships.
• Lead on the continual improvement of health and safety performance through a good understanding of the risk profile and the development of a positive health and safety culture.
• Any other duties as directed, within the pay grade definition.

Person Specification

To be able to undertake this role effectively you will need the key attributes and skills outlined below. When completing your application ensure you demonstrate how you meet these criteria.

Essential Criteria

• Excellent communicator through the medium of Welsh to a variety of audiences including school-age children (6-13 year olds)
• Excellent organisational and time management skills.
• Ability to plan and deliver workshops under your own initiative and as part of a team.
• Knowledge of STEM subjects.
• Working knowledge and understanding of current developments within the Welsh Education System.
• Experience of delivering workshops/lessons/training to a variety of audiences in a fun and engaging way and through the medium of Welsh.
• A degree or similar qualification in a subject which includes a large percentage of STEM.
• Commitment and flexibility, there may be some requirement for out of hours delivery.
• Enthusiasm for STEM as a subject and able to inspire audiences through the medium of English and Welsh.
• Positive attitude and professionalism.
• Willingness to work as part of a team.
• Full driving licence with willingness to travel

Desirable Criteria

• Knowledge of the Welsh STEM curriculum.
• Ability to program in SCRATCH (training can be provided).
• Experience of delivering workshops/lessons in STEM.
• Networking with university academics, teachers and other professionals.
• Teaching Qualification (planning and delivery of a session)

Additionally, you will need to:

• Be willing to undertake activities in the evening and at weekends when necessary.
• Be willing to travel to undertake activities.
• Undertake an Enhanced DBS with Child Lists check.
