Senior Ecologist

SALARY: PS4 (SCP 35-37) £46,142 - £48,226

Hybrid working – working two days from one of the below office locations

LOCATION : Bangor, Conwy, Halkyn, Dolgellau, Aberystwyth, Newtown, Llandrindod

The Senior Ecologist will provide professional ecological advice and support to NMWTRA teams and partners, ensuring that capital and maintenance operations comply with environmental legislation while maximising opportunities to enhance biodiversity, including supporting the requirements of Section 6 of the Environment (Wales) Act 2016 and Llwybr Newydd i Natur. You will support the Climate Change and Environmental Manager and wider teams in developing and implementing environmental strategies, policies and programmes that protect, manage and maintain the soft estate.


The role includes obtaining protected species and site licences, assents and consents where required, ensuring all associated survey, monitoring and reporting obligations are met, and developing network-wide Protected Species Programme of Works licences and reporting systems to the satisfaction of Natural Resources Wales (NRW).


You will manage and continuously improve environmental constraint processes (TRECS), oversee the roadkill recording process and use the resulting data to identify opportunities for wildlife mitigation, including the introduction of appropriate crossing infrastructure across the strategic road network. You will also manage budgets and projects relating to ecological mitigation and enhancement, promote environmental innovation across NMWTRA and its supply chain, and monitor the effective delivery of environmental requirements within the A55 Anglesey DBFO Project.

Personal attributes

Essential

Ability to work effectively as part of a team.

Desirable

Ability to manage projects and achieve necessary programmed targets etc

Qualifications and relevant training

Essential

Degree in Zoology/Botany or equivalent qualification.

Desirable

Professional qualification in arboriculture.

Relevant experience

Essential

At least 5 year’s experience of working on ecological matters on graduating.

Desirable

Experience of dealing with ecological matters/landscape issues pertaining to highways.

Skills and specialist knowledge

Essential

Knowledge of UK and European Legislation relevant to wildlife, Biodiversity etc

Desirable

Experience of working on Biodiversity Action Plans.

Language requirements

Listening and Speaking - Entry

Able to pronounce the names of places and people correctly.Able to follow instructions and understand simple conversation through the medium of Welsh and English on familiar matters and respond to simple requests for information

Reading and Understanding - Entry

Able to read and understand short and simple letters, e-mails, leaflets, and signs in Welsh and English on familiar everyday issues, in order to convey them to someone else.

Writing - Entry

Able to write a simple message requesting or giving information about familiar everyday issues in the workplace.
