About the role

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Legal Services team at Conwy County Borough Council as a Paralegal, based at Coed Pella, Colwyn Bay. The role is 37 hours a week, Monday to Friday, on a hybrid basis. You will support solicitors with court work and other non-contentious areas of work, liaising with clients and working flexibly across the department as required. Some work will be done at home or at court, but the majority of time will be in the office.

About us

You will join an established team of nineteen legal staff, divided into three sub-teams: family law (adult and children, including education); prosecutions and litigation; and property and planning. Many staff have trained and been promoted from within the organisation, and you will join a supportive environment committed to staff development, including training as part of the Conwy Conversation.

Main Duties

  • Assisting in the preparation and conduct of civil and criminal litigation and attending Court with Counsel
  • Assisting in the preparation and conduct of a full range of child care cases including care proceedings, fostering and adoption
  • Assisting in the preparation of statutory notices and orders under a variety of legislation, e.g. relating to highways, education, etc.
  • Assisting in the preparation of contracts and agreements
  • Assisting with freehold and leasehold conveyancing and Town and Country Planning matters
  • Assisting with work relating to adult social care, including Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults, the Mental Health Act 1983 and the Mental Capacity Act 2005
  • Undertaking legal research as required
  • Undertaking any other duties consistent with the role and appropriate to the grade of the post

Essential

  • Recent or previous legal work experience and/or a legal qualification (or working towards one)
  • Excellent IT skills including Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Minute-taking skills
  • Excellent communication and listening skills, able to relate to staff at all levels and external agencies/public
  • Ability to communicate in English
  • Enthusiasm, commitment and a flexible approach to work within a dynamic Legal section
  • Ability to work under pressure, prioritise tasks, and collaborate effectively both in a team and independently
  • Ability to deal with sensitive issues, with an understanding of the need for confidentiality at all times
  • Excellent organisational skills, able to manage own workload and work to strict deadlines, at times without direct supervision
  • Ability to act on instructions from lawyers/legal assistants within current legislation and Council policy
  • Ability to undertake legal research, maintain spreadsheets and check witness statements
  • A commitment to high standards of service delivery

Desirable

  • A degree in law or equivalent
  • The ability to communicate in Welsh at Level 1
  • Ability to travel throughout the County
